Suggest Treatment For Neurosarcoidosis With A History Of Hypercalcemia And Liver Failure

I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis in 2006, and according to my physicians it is almost the worst case they have ever encountered. It has affected every organ, I have experienced over 5 septic infections, and many that were not. I have had both hospital and community acquired MRSA, And VRE. I have experienced liver failure due to an idiosyncratic response to a normal dose of acetaminophen taken over a three day period. I have suffered kidney failure from hypercalecemia 3 times . My joint, muscle and bone involvement is off the charts. I am 55 years old , have never smoked, yet I have COPD. I had a splendectomy when my spleen reached the size of a foot ball. Today I was given a provisional diagnosis of neurosarcodosis. Based on my history, should I expect an extreme reaction, and what is the worse thing that can occur with neurosarcodosis?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Sarcoidosis is a chronic inflammatory disease, primarily of lungs, but may involve any organ or multiple organs in the body. Presence of the disease in the nervous system is called neuro-sarcoidosis. About 5-10% of all cases of sarcoidosis of other organs may develop neuro-sarcoidosis (Involvement of brain and spinal chord). Only 1% of the cases will have involvement of nervous system alone. As the parts of nervous system involved may differ, hence symptoms in type and severity will also differ.

Precisely, no specific treatment is available for this condition at present. The only group of medicines giving relief in symptoms may be immuno-suppressant. The relief in symptoms may be varying in every case. However, natural remissions in the symptoms of disease for various duration may be present in each patient. I think I have answered your query.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
