Suggest Treatment For Nasal Congestion While On Afrin And Nasacort

Have had stuffy nose for 3 weeks. Seen ENT said use afrin and nasacort. Didn t help. Have had 2 steriod injections in five days. Still stopped up and can not blow anything out my nose. Had to go to ER yesterday totallly dehyrated and blood glucose 389. Did steriod injections cause this? What do you recommend to get my nose unstopped? Dr. said quit using nose spray that it was making my symptoms worse.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Prolonged use of afrin spray would cause worsening, topical nasal decongestants should only be used at a few days at a time.

The topical steroid spray, nasocort can be used for an extended period of time and should be combined with an oral antihistamine and oral decongestant medication eg zyrtec d, allegra d, claritine d, benadyl d

Steam inhalation may also be effective as well in relieving your symptoms.

In terms of the blood sugar, it is possible that the steroids may have played a role.

I hope this helps
