Suggest Treatment For Myelomalacia Causing Numbness,tingling And Pain In Left Arm

I was recently diagnosed with myelomalacia of the cspine.My doctor is trying to get me seen by a neurosurgeon ASAP, since i have numbness, tingling and extreme pain in my left arm, shoulder blade,etc. my question is, how difficult is surgery to recover from and what is the timeframe for recovery? my doctor doesnt want me to do alot, including crocheting..will this cause damage? i am left handed, but crochet with my right..
