I think your mother is having some regurgitation(leaky vave) lesion like MR(Mitral Regurgitation) or AR(Atrial Regurgitation). The chance for doing an open heart surgery at this age is very unlikely because of anesthesia risks. Treatment option depend upon the severity of disease and condition of the patient.Initially we would go for medical management with drugs like Warfarin and beta blockers. As I said open heart surgery is not good at this age due to operative risks. Percutaneous valve repair is another treatment option in which malformed valve is approached through a blood vessel with out opening the chest.
