My wife is suffering from goitrous hypo thyroid with tsh 114 and t4 0.8. She took eltraxin 100mcg and after 20 days many and side effects occured like palpitation, increase in pulse rate, nervous, sleeplessness, feel like something beating in the thyroid and back of head, feeling like swinging of legs, feel like something running inside. Dosage reduced to 50 mcg. Even now she is having the same side effects. What should be the problem. Is these side effects go in duecourse? How to over come these. Checked with cardiologist and assured heart is good.

Hello there,
I can understand your concern about your wife's symptoms. Hypothyroidism with a TSH of 114 warrants eltroxin to be taken in little high doses. Rarely this high dose can cause side effects like mentioned by you as this is external thyroid hormone and her body is not used to high doses of thyroid hormone. It is advisable to start a smaller dose and then gradually go up on the dose. Some of the side effects will wane off with time. 50mcg of Eltroxin should reduce her symptoms. Eventually TSH values will determine if her eltroxin dose is enough or not.So after 6 weeks of starting therapy get a TSH test. Your endocrinologist will be able to titrate the doses based on the values.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
