Suggest Treatment For Hyperthyroidism And Swollen Legs And Ankles

I have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My T4 level was 75 and I am on 40mg Carbimazole. I have been on this for two weeks but the only real change is that my appetite is back and I have put on weight. i also have swollen legs and ankles. Is this a result of the medication.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

In some people, carbimazole may cause swollen feet and other symptoms. I am afraid your dosage is very high. I would like to request you to take 5 mg tablet, 3 times daily.

It's way too high, the dosage you have given in your question. I also suggest you do:

Kidney Function Tests, Blood Pressure (Morning) by a healthcare professional (if possible0 or you can use a digital home BP machine, but in this case, please measure 3 times in one session.

Do not worry. With the reduction of the dosage, your swellings problem will go away.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
