I m a 66 yr old male who until a couple of yrs ago, had very good blood pressure. I m 5 6 tall, and weigh about 162 lbs. My blood pressure test today was 145/79. A couple of yrs ago I weighed about 158-160 lbs, and has readings about 118/76 approx. Should I be alarmed at the increase? Common sense says yes, but wanted a medical opion
Hi welcome to HCM. Elevated blood pressure needs to be corrected promptly.The cause in your case seems to undue excess body weight.Reduce your body weight to 100-110 lbs.Maintain your BMI around 22.Regular physical exercise for 20 min a day will help.Statins are needed i cases where there is elevated blood lipids.Antihypertensive medications are often used to control the blood pressure.Restrict the intake of salt to less than 6 gm/day.Consult your doctor for further care.
