Suggest Treatment For Headaches And High Sensitivity In The Scalp

I have increasingly strong head ace in form of very sensitive head skin which if untouched still fires pain attacks, each lasting 2-3 sec but hurting a lot on top of overall head skin pain. There are 2 major places: the upper left side and the right back of my head. The daytime doctor guessed an inflammation of arteries and had a blood test done. But I have access to the results which came online this evening and all values are in normal bounds. One way to reduce the pain is to press a wet towel on my head but when I release it, the firing is back. I should add that after a long time I am taking medication currently (for nearly a week) (APO-AMOXI CLAY 875/125 MG AMOXICILLIN/POTASSIUM CLAV) because of an bacterial infection. I have no record of allergies to medication but everything can be the first time, I guess. Not knowing better I currently take 1 pill Advill every 8 hours (Ibuprofen) but it does not seem to help much. I wonder whether I should go to Emergency even though it is 1am here.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As suggested by your treating doctor, the headache and scalp tenderness is likely due to temporal arteritis, and in most cases, blood workup can be normal.

It can be confirmed by taking biopsy of temporal artery or an ultrasound, however, in most cases clinical history is sufficient to make a diagnosis. It is a painful condition, and can cause complications like vision problems or massive internal bleeding.

Although the disease can not be cured completely, use of steroids and other disease-modifying drugs can help minimize symptoms to a great extent for most patients. If the pain is beyond tolerance, you can go to Emergency.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
