Suggest Treatment For Headache, Swelling In The Gums And Abdominal Bloating

My daughter has been experiencing the following symptoms for over a year now and she keeps developing new symptoms: Mouth and gums swelling, cold sores, headaches, rash that is raised bumps and burns, feeling dizzy and faint, swelling of legs and arms, bloating, loss of feeling in legs, tingling in hands and feet, exhaustion, feeling very foggy, has gained over 50 lbs in 3 months despite working out, and like she can t remember things. She was diagnosed with Celiacs about 6 months ago and has been gluten free since. We are at a loss with all of these symptoms. Our doctor passed away last month and we are having a hard time finding someone that is accepting patients. She is a 22 year old college student who is in her Sr. year and has not had any major illness until the Celiac diagnosis.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your daughter has a history of Celiac disease. She is suffering from the symptoms (Abdominal bloating, heartburn, dizziness, fainting attacks, headache, ulcers mouth, fatigue) of Celiac disease. There is as such no medications that treat Celiac disease.
1. You have to help her stay strictly in a gluten-free diet. She should not take beer, pasta, cereals, etc.
2. She should avoid oily, junk food & take fresh fruits, berries & veggies. Since she has gum infection, she had vitamin deficiency.
3. Give her food rich in vitamin C & calcium like cheese yogurt, orange juice, milk, etc.
4. Avoid non-vegetarian food as it will trigger mouth infection, swelling or ulcers.
5. Keep your blood sugar level under control. For headache, she can take Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Get her physically examined for mouth & gum swelling to rule out thrush, get her treated for the Celiac disease at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
