Suggest Treatment For Fractured Rib Injury

I have been diagnosed with a fractured displaced rib following a fall and have been told I will need surgery minor if there is 1 break and possibly major if there are 2 breaks. I am a 43 year old female with NSIP, Asthma, Ankylosing Spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, psoratic arthritis (hence the fall that caused this!) 5 foot 3 inches tall and slightly over weight. What type of operation will this be and what is the recovery time? Thanks

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
Even hair thin crack/ bruising / strong bump on ribs leads to unbearable pain in ribs- because they keep moving while breathing, more so in elderly patients -as their bones are weaker due to age.
- while treating such patient I usually advise for stabilizing the ribs by putting elastic adhesive bandage around chest for a few days. This allows respiration while supporting rib.
- NSAID drugs are to be given twice a day after food /ranitidine pills to avoid acidity.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
