Suggest Treatment For Excessive Mucus Secretion In The Mouth

My daughter who is 6 just had her tonsils and adenoids removed on Wednesday the 14th of March so today is day 3 of post op. She has alot of mucus causing her to gag some and throw up once. Is it safe to give her benadryl or some form of cold medicine to help break it up or dry it up?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Unfortunately, cold medications have side effects. Furthermore, Benadryl is an antihistamine and is good for hay fever and itchy rashes. It is possible that your child has a lot of mucus because her throat still hurts and it is difficult for her to swallow the secretions from her mouth. I suggest throat lozenges, ice cream, popsicles, jello, cold drinks and Acetaminophen for pain.

I hope this helps you and that your daughter will feel better quickly.

Please return if we can be of help in the future.
