Suggest Treatment For Excessive Daytime Sleepiness

I m unusually healthy for my age, and still employed at (nearly) 83. I cycle 8 miles to work (el-assisted bike), and work as a Night Porter. However, I seem to have got increasingly sleepy over the last year or so, and can fall asleep - almost as if I ve passed out. My Thyroid has been mentioned, but from what I ve Googled, I don t really think it s theproblem. My Heart has been checked, and in good shape, I don t have Asthma or Hay Fever. I don t smoke. I enjoy my food, but have a very steady food regime. Sleepiness seems to be the only real problem I m having,k and it makes me feel as if I m sleeping my life away.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. You are 83 years old and are completely healthy. You are working as night porter and at this age the night duties result in poor sleep during day time. Persistent poor sleep for long time has resulted in day time drowsiness and sleepiness. Try to change your duties to day duties if possible. If that is not possible then for sleep problems visit a doctor. For shift workers drugs like Ramelteon or Melatonin etc helps to correct sleep rhythm and this would result in good sleep during day time. Visit a doctor for prescription for these drugs.

Improved sleep would cause improvement of your symptoms and you will feel freshened. Try to do exercise daily and keep your health in good levels.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
