Suggest Treatment For Enlarged Spleen And Kidney Stones

Hello, I m a 19 year old male who that recently had to go to the ER because of a 6mm kidney stone. That s not unusual for me, it s my fifth time. However, while I was there I was told that I also have an enlarged spleen. That s the first time that ever happened, and I don t feel any sort of passion, discomfortor anything actually. Everything I ve seen on splewn enlargement involves some amount of pain, but I don t have any, except from the now expelled kidney stone. Any help on figuring out what s going on would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

Presence of kidney stone and splenomegaly are not corelated to each other, rather it may be a co-incidental finding to find these two conditions simultaneously. The treatment of both these conditions will have to be done taking each of these conditions as separate entities. Marginal increase in size of spleen sometimes is not of concern and doesn't require any treatment. In other cases treatment of the cause may resolve the increased size of spleen.

However, the presence of stone in left kidney in presence of hypersplenism may result in changing the procedure of removal of stone. Size and location of stone will decide the procedure to be adopted for removal of stone. Many a times the procedure of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy and / or procedure of percutaneous nephrolithotomy are contra-indicated due to a risk of injury to spleen in case of enlarged spleen. In these cases many a times retrograde intrarenal surgery is to be performed for the safety of spleen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
