Suggest Treatment For Dizziness And Balance Disorder

My husband is 81 years old, He has been having dizzy spells and he sleeps all the time. He goes to bed at 7:00 PM, Up at 3:22 AM then naps all day. He is also unsteady on his feet (dizzy spells?). He does smoke a about a pack a day. Could this be a stroke of sometime?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
A person 81 years old, hard smoker (1 pc/day ?? years) sleepy most part of the day and unsteady on his feet can have a variety of causes like: vestibular (inner ear) disorders, central nervous system disorders (such as stroke), cardiac problems (including low or high blood pressure), low blood sugar, infection, hyper-ventilation associated with anxiety attacks, medication side effects or interactions between drugs, or an inadequate or poorly balanced diet, smoking.

It is needed a thorough evaluation by a physician to help you sort out these different possible causes and arrive at a correct diagnosis and treatment.

In such cases, the trouble in any one system may not be severe, but the combined effects may be enough to cause a serious problem with balance and his general condition.

Please feel free to ask for any other information.
