Suggest Treatment For Distal Phalanx Fracture Of The Small Finger

i have a distal phalanx fracture of the pinkie, 3 weeks old and, based on x-rays, the distance between the fracture has grown to 1/4 of an inch or more (I think due to the growth of the nail which is pushing the tip of the finger instead of the nail itself.) My surgeon suggests x pins as a surgical treatment. I am concerned its been too long since the break and maybe a screw would be better. any advice?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pins are still an option at this stage, they would go through both bones to bring them closer together. Since the bones are far apart, a screw may not work as well.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
