Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a case study and I am having a problem with a question. Case study involves Jason a 14 mo old who was admitted for croup. He is mildly dehydrated. One question says "you begin the IV of 5%D/.2NaCl for Jason but do not ad the KCl until_______ why?"
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
If the baby is not suffering from hypokalemia, then no need to add KCL. It is better to give isotonic solution or fluids. Normal saline is used to recover from dehydration.
KCL adding is not good because sudden replacement may lead to cardiac arrhythmias and there may be chances of cardiac arrest.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
