Suggest Treatment For Constipation With Diabetes

My husband has Type 2 diabetes and takes Glucophage. He has always had 'some' difficulty going to the toilet, but since being diagnosed 12 months ago with diabetes the problem has become much worse.
He sometimes goes days and days without going to the toilet and, of course, this becomes uncomfortable for him.
Our Doctor has prescribed Fybogel twice daily, regrettably with little effect.
He also takes Maximum Strength Senokot, again with little effect.
He has a very healthy diet, (being diabetic), muesli for breakfast, lots of fresh vegetables and fresh fruit and I always make sure he drinks plenty of fluids.
Have you any suggestions that may help. Many thanks.

Diabetologist 's  Response
Dear madam,
I appreciate your concern.
Your husband is exhibiting the typical side effects of metformin. Ideally in the absence of side effects or tolerable side effects metformin is a wonder drug to manage diabetes. But in view of the side effects troubling him more i would prefer to reduce dose of metformin and add a small tiny sulphonyl urea to control blood sugars. Here in India we get 0.5mg glimipride which in your husband's case might be useful. Please check blood sugars and discuss with your physician/Diabetologist regarding substitute medications.
Wishing you well!
