Suggest Treatment For Constant Pain And Swelling In Left Hand

Hi Dr. Rynne, I am a 63 yr old male, for quite some time now I had problems with my left hand, pain and some swelling. I ve been tested twice for carpal tunnel, nothing there. Now in the last 10 months my little finger would swell bad and couldn t move it, have had one visit to a Rheumatologist, he took blood and did xrays, showing nothing, RA runs in my family and we thought that would be the culprit, but nada. I m going to see him again next week. He had me on prednisone for 2 and a half months just to help with the swelling, now the swelling has progressed to the next three fingers and the pain is now down in my wrist, so my hand is pretty much useless at this point. ( he also ruled out Spondyloarthrophy). Any suggestions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the pain involving left little finger since months with extension to other three fingers and inability to use hand for conventional activities do indicate possible issue with:
@ Lesion at brachial plexus of axillary region with underlying nerve compression
@ Compartment pressure changes or fascia inflammation

As the arthritis factor is being ruled out, further work up with an MRI of the brachial plexus with wrist is mandatory after discussing with your orthopedic specialist or rheumatologist.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
