Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I broke my ribs 3 weeks a go and my lung collapsed. I have been trying to keep active within reason as I am keen to return back to work. I have been resting with my ribs supported when in bed or sitting down but I can feel my ribs click when I move. Is this normal? It hurts when they click and feels uncomfortable
Rib fracture will heal by itself and no fixation is required. The clicking sound is quite common and is due to tear in the costochondral cartilage. Nothing much to worry and it will settle in few weeks.
You have to do breathing exercises using a device called “incentive spirometer” available over the counter to improve lung function and to prevent lungs from collapsing.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
