Suggest Treatment For Cluster Headaches And Migraine

I have suffered from Cluster Headaches and Intractable Migraines for the past 12-15 years and don t respond to any of the preventative or abortive treatments available, whether they be holistic or standard. I have been living through these with almost daily use of narcotics, and emergency IV narcotic treatments when I ve been having one for 3-4 days with a pain scale of 8 to 9. I have tried EVERY medication, Botox, acupuncture, chiropractic, Chinese herbal teas--you name it, I ve tried it, with no success or alleviation of intensity or duration. I ve seen 8 neurologists, 4 pain management specialists, and more--still with no success. Of course, many of the doctors suggest I am suffering from rebound headaches due to the narcotics, but I have proven that this only occurs with specific narcotics, but not all. I m currently taking 8 MG Dilaudid every 8 hours as needed, but still suffer from breakthroughs with no medication to relieve the pain without the intervention of the IV narcotics. I ve just had a falling out with my pain management doctor for a variety of reasons I d be happy to share with you if it would help, but I m now in the position of trying to find another without a referral, and know I m getting ready to go through withdrawal, of which I have been through before on my own 3 times, and don t think I can do it again on my own. I have no insurance, can t work, have no money, don t qualify for Medicaid, etc. Now what? I also suffer from chronic depression (no wonder), ADHD and OCD.

Hi,

Your treatment strategy depends on the frequency and severity of your headaches, the degree of disability your headaches cause, and your other medical conditions.

Pain relievers such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) may help relieve mild migraines. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others), also may help relieve mild migraines in some people.

Drugs marketed specifically for migraines, such as the combination of acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine (Excedrin Migraine), also may ease moderate migraine pain.

Triptans effectively relieve the pain and other symptoms that are associated with migraines. They are available in pill, nasal spray and injection form.

Anti-nausea medications, opioids and steroids may be used in addition to severe cases. Also, you need to rest and relax and have good sleep. If there is no improvement, it would be good to do an MRI scan and have a neurological exam.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
