Suggest Treatment For Chronic Lower Back Pain And Degenerating Discs Causing Leg Pain

Hi I have chronic lower back pain (degenerating discs) causing pain down both legs. I work for myself but sometimes I don t think I can keep going, is there any treatments that may help? I take pain killers everyday, panadene forte first thing in the morning and try to make it through the day without anymore and at night I have a couple of Valium and a spa before going to bed. At times it is bad enough that I will also take 10 mg oxynorm at night

Hello,

Chronic lower back pain due to degenerative disc disease is very common and the following are treatment options:
1) NSAIDs like Ibuprofen and Naproxen can be taken twice daily for 14 days
2) If muscle stiffness is present, you can have a tab. Chlorzoxazone for muscle relaxation
3) To prevent gastric irritation caused by NSAIDs, tab. Pantop 40 mg is to be taken once daily before food
4) You can continue taking tab. Panadene daily once
5) Once, the inflammation subsides, physical therapy is to be sought
6) Physical therapy helps in strengthening the back muscles and decreases the pain
7) Various postural modifications like having back support while sitting and sleeping on a flat surface are important

If pain doesn't decrease with the above treatment, you may contact a spine surgeon for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
