Suggest Treatment For Bunion

I have a major problem with my foot so probably should be talking with a podiatrist. I have a bunion, which in itself is not hurting me, and I still have good range of motion in the joint, but the toe beside the bunion, and the pad underneath the toe, is so painful It is difficult for me to walk on. I have been wearing orthotics for 10 years and flat comfortable shoes. I had a bunion operation on the other foot 10 years ago, which has done no good, reverted back to a toe that curves over the next toe and is rotated, so am leary about having another operation. What to do? I ve been told many different stories from both podiatrists and orthopods.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Bunion is a bony bump on the joint at the base of your big toe. It happens when your big toe points toward your second toe. The symptoms include: a bony bump on the joint at the base of the big toe, pain around the big toe joint, trouble moving the big toe. Your big toe might also turn red and swollen. You can do your own to make it better: wear wide, low heeled shoes, or special shoes designed to have extra space around the big toe.

Do stretching exercises- this helps the toe and foot joints move better. Wear a bunion pad, put a cold gel pack or bag of ice on the bunion for 20 to 30 min after exercising. Take medicine to reduce pain. If you try yourself it does not help your doctor will provide the treatment with a special shoe insert, a foot splint.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
