Suggest Treatment For Brown Recluse Spider Bite With Purple Area

I was bitten by a brown recluse spider (on my forearm) 10 days ago. I was admitted to the hospital where I stayed for 4 days receiving numerous IV antibiotics (by the second day I had cellulitis from my fingers to above my elbow). The cellulitis resolved in a day or two. The large purple/blue area on my arm (8 inches by 6 inches) has not resolved. It is quite hard and has a definite raised/hard border between the non affected area and affected area. I have not had any necrotized lesions. I do have the puncture wound but it is smaller than a pea. The affected area is still very painful and still feels as if it is on fire. My biggest worry is that the area will become necrotic or slough off... I feel like I should be doing something but don t know what might turn it around.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your case history of spider bite, my treatment advice is:

1. Don't squeeze the lesion as it may worsen the condition.
2. Apply a mild antibiotic cream like Fusiderm cream.
3. Take a NSAID like ibuprofen. Consult your physician for prescription.
4. Other treatment options are oral antibiotics like levofloxacin, cefadroxil and azithromycin which are to be taken only after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harshit Bhachech
