Suggest Treatment For Body Pain In Old Age

Hellow Sir, My Mother is 65 years old. In 2009 there was a minor operation in her Feet Elbow. Doctors apply one small ROD to joint her bone. It was cracked very badly. But after operation regularly pain happens on the operated place. After one year in july 2010 Doctor suggest to make operation again to pluk the rod out. Now everything is over but the skin of the operated place is black & pain is not gone. Doctors gave very high calcium dosages also but no postive answer is there. They said that calcium is very low much more thing. But the main thing is that now her hand figers are also not moving lightly and it also pains. Her shoulder also pains and she dosent puts her hand back, up and down. No one doctor is giving any satisfied answer. Please Sir tell me Now what to do. Thank You Sir.

Hello,

Your mother has low calcium with weak bones (called osteoporosis) and poor healing at the operation site (black skin) indicative of diabetes possibly not well controlled. Assuming the elbow surgery was performed well its very important that she moves all the joints of the limb. What would have happened is that she would have kept her shoulder without moving for a long time resulting in stiffness and pain. Pain should be controlled by medications like dilcofenac, celecoxib, or pregabilin. She will need warm saline packs on the shoulder and encouraged to do circular shoulder movements.

She should move the elbow and hand at the same time. A good physical therapist can guide her in all these. In addition she can use pain patches. In some cases your doctor can give a local injection to reduce pain and inflammation to encourage movement. Please understand that she should move the joints herself otherwise this will become more stiff and painful.A the same time please ensure her diabetes is well controlled and osteoporosis is treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. George Verghese, Orthopedic Surgeon
