Suggest Treatment For Blisters And Peeling Skin On Lips

Hi, I have had cracked, peeling lips on the top and bottom in the middle for the past 3 months or so. They get tiny watery blisters along the edges in those areas and then peel. This keeps repeating itself every few days. I saw my family provider and she thought it was possibly related to eczema, which I have trouble with in the winter on my legs. I have never had cold sores and asked her to test me for Herpes, which she ordered for all types and the results were negative on all counts. I had my lips tattooed by a professional make up artist in a professional facility about 10+ years ago and have never had problems in any way until recently. She said sometimes people react to the red dye in the ink. I contracted HPV after my divorce a few years ago and had a hysterectomy last summer for recurring abnormal Paps - all turned out fine with only one pre-cancerous spot. In May, my boyfriend of almost 3 years developed about 12 small, flat warts on his penis and went to the doctor to be treated. I was concerned that this was related from having oral sex between us. She said not and I asked my dentist at my routine appt. earlier in Aug. to check for oral HPV, but he said my mouth and all looked good. I have been using plain Vaseline, no lip gloss and my doctor also said to use the Cortisone ointment sparingly that I use for eczema. I finally made an appt. with the dermatologist, but can t get in for 2 weeks yet. I am a college instructor and it is very irritating and looks like severely chapped lips - especially on the top. Any suggestions? Thank you, Dawn M.

Dermatologist 's  Response
Hi.
As per your case history you may be having herpes labialis. Even though herpes tests are negative, complete tests for serum IgG and IgM for both hsv 1and 2 may bot be done.
Sometimes these tests are negative initially.

Your clinical history best correlates with herpes. Warts due to hpv doesn't have such clinical picture.

My treatment advice is -
1. Apply a good emolient for peeling skin of lips.
2. Whenever such fresh lesions appear you need to take tab acyclovir 400mg thrice a day for 5days and apply acyclovir ointment.
3. Repeating the above treatment each time will reduce the frequency of episodes.

Thanks.
