Suggest Treatment For Bad Odor Urine

Hello, Recently, I have noticed that my urine has been giving off an odor that I can best compare to the smell of burnt plastic. I experience no pain before, during, or after urination, and stay vigorously hydrated throughout each day (1 gallon of water per day). There is no abnormal discoloration of the urine, and I am not experiencing any discomfort or pain in the kidney regions. I am a very healthy, 24 year-old male with no history of serious illness or major bodily trauma. I will mention, however, that I have experienced two (2) separate cases of exertional rhabdomyolisis in the past calendar year. Both cases were treated successfully without any damage done to the kidneys. Given my history, I am now well aware of the symptoms that indicate the onset of rhabdomyolisis (namely caramel colored urine), but cannot attribute any of these symptoms with my current urine situation. Any professional opinions are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The bad odor in urine can be related to a urinary tract infection.

I suggest doing a urine test to confirm the diagnosis.

If the diagnosis is confirmed, I suggest using a cycle of antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin.

I also suggest drinking a lot of liquids and especially cranberry juice.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
