Suggest Treatment For Anxiety And Bipolar Disorder

My daughter badly needs psychiatric care but won t go to get it. I suspect her of having BPD. When she is mad at me (often) she calls me horrible names. Then I demand an apology. don t get one, and she says she is going to kill herself. This has been going on for 20 years. She is 45. I don t know what to do. Background: she was sexually molested (not rape, but some touching and lots of mind games) by my father from age 11 to 22. Nobody had any idea. She didn t tell for all that time because she thought it would break the family apart, which it did somewhat. He is long dead. She had some counseling, some hospitalizations for an eating disorder, but unfortunately had some very bad experiences with psychology professionals which is why she won t go for counseling now. I d like her to go for DBT but if I even start to talk about counseling she will go berserk. I m 73 and am at my wits end.

Hi,
First of all, your daughter has been suffering from anxiety for a long period of time. The prolonged anxiety can affect her personal cohesion. Second, the change of the hormones in the menstrual cycle can aggravate her case. Third, she often insult you, because she expected you to prevent the sexual assault, which she faced during her childhood and the eating disorder is a sign of a bad relation between the mother and her daughter. So, your daughter needs a psychiatric treatment and a psychological treatment in order to enable her to restore her social cohesion.

The psychiatric treatment should be Buspirone 15 mg: half a tablet before breakfast for three days then half a tablet twice per day before meals then add half a tablet every three days until the dose becomes one tablet twice per day before meals for 90 days, then withdraw the drug by decreasing the dose by half a tablet every two weeks. The psychological therapy should go hand in hand with the medical therapy.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mustafa, Neurologist
