Suggest Treatment For Acute Asthma

I have accute Asthma. Am 78 years old and didn't get Asthma until I was in my mid -40's. I am presently taking Qvar and it isn't working. I've taken this for several years. Along with this I use Proair inhaler plus my nebulizer with Albuterol Sulfate and Ipritropium when needed. Each time I get worse, I go to the Urgent care and they give me prescriptions for Prednisone. I know Prednisone is NOT good for you but what else can I do?
