Suggest Treatment For UTI

I was just diagnosed yesterday with a UTI and today is the 2nd day on Cipro. The urinary retention is severe. I did go the ER 3 days ago for a cath. Yesterday my OB/GYN showed me how to cath if necessary. Today it was necessary for me to go to the medical supply retailer and purchase catheters. I did cath this afternoon and it was a last resort (and I had no complications doing it). Today I have blood present from the urethra. Is cathing dangerous? This is my first UTI at 50 years old and it is nothing less then alarming.
