Suggest Tests To Diagnose Variations In Eye While Having Choroidal Nevus

My son, now 21, has a choroid nevus. It was first brought to our attention in 2013 (he was 19). We were told he had a freckle in his eye and they wanted to take a picture of it. He has had 2 pictures since then (2014 and 2015), and nothing has changed. We are told it is flat, and the normal greyish color it should be but my husband saw the picture they took and it looked like it was about 1/4 of the eye (we were not given any measurements and did not think to ask). My husband said it was big and the opthamologist said it was not small. Opthamologist has said he needs to have it checked once a year. The doctor is well respected in our area. So my questions are: 1) what are the chances this will become dangerous (ie cancer)- I ve not seen any statistics on this; 2) is the size a concern even though it is flat 3) what are the chances it will change if it has remained the same for 3 years and 4) if there is a change, does it definitely mean cancer or can it become something else first and 5) I have to believe that if he is only required to come back once a year, they believe this is benign and will stay that way.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The choroid nevus is benign condition and does not turn into malignancy at any point of time. Similarly, there are no chances of its regression, but it can grow over a period of time and one has to remain in periodic surveillance of the Ophthalmologist. However, there are recent advances in the molecular science, including development of VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) inhibitors as Bevacizumab and others which can help to prevent its growth through various steps. I would like to discuss the scope of such therapy in your case during your next visit with doctor.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
