Suggest Tests To Diagnose ADHD In Children

I have 2 daughters, 3 and 5, who both exhibit some symptoms that might be classified as Autism spectrum, sensory disorder, etc. I have not had them evaluated because I believe the symptoms are mild, somewhat manageable, and probably would bring inconclusive feedback from experts. I can also say that other family members seem to exhibit similar symptoms such as great difficulty adjusting to new social environments and high frustration from minor, unexpected incidents. Two of these family members were diagnosed with rather pronounced dyslexia, and two others with ADHD in the 70 s. I suspect they also have some form of Autism ****So I m wondering if Autism that is genetically linked tends to be milder or perhaps manifests in different ways than usual. ****I am hoping for a response from someone who has very specific knowledge and experience in this area. i d like to learn as much as I can in order to help my kids navigate their difficulties in the future. Again, I am concerned with labeling them as Autism spectrum yet I do think there are some areas that they may need assistance with in the future. Thank you so much in advance for your time!!

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, your relevant information is pertaining to different sets of clinical conditions, which need to be explained separately.

@ Autism spectrum disorder:
- Characterised by difficulty in social interactions, behavior, language, intellectual behavior which impair daily functioning
- Usually children are yonger than 3 years age
- High incidences of abnormal EEG, seziures and abnormal brain morphology
- About 25% of them develop seizures by adulthood
- It is not genetically transmitted which goes for differential diagnosis of Rett disease (X linked) in girls with mental retardation and microcephaly

@ Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder:
- Inattentive (predominant type A)
Hyperactive or impulsive (predominant type B) or mix of A and B type
- The symptoms occur in both set up as school, home or work.
- More common in boys
- Must be present for more than 6 months duration
- Increase risk of development disorders in adolescence

The diagnosis of both is clinical and there are no absolute diagnostic tests but cognitive evaluation do help to assess the severity of the condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
