Suggest Substitute Medication For Epilim For Nocturnal Epilepsy

Hi There! I have been taking 800mg a day of Epilim to treat my nocturnal epilepsy. I have been taking it now for nearly 3 months. I have gained about 5kg even though I have been walking & bike riding 4-5 days a week & have cut right down on fat & sugar yet have not lost any weight but in fact gained 1-2kg?? I am Concerned all my hard work is a waste of time because my body is always battling with the Epilim. The neurologist said there may be weight gain but can be combated by diet & exercise. I m feeling pretty deflated at the moment & ready to go back to the Neuro to ask for a change in medication. I have tried Keppra which made be very irritable & didn t stop my seizures, so I switched to Epilim. Do you know what the alternatives to Epilim are?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the Epillim is an anti-convulsant medicine with sodium valproate content. It is associated with variety of side effects, most common ones are being irritability, dizziness and weight gain.

As you are not tolerating it to its best level, the drug must be replaced with better efficacious molecule with lesser side effect profile. In my clinic, I do recommend use of Lamotrigene, however you must discuss the issue with your consultant before taking any decision.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
