Suggest Remedy To Stop Mild Tongue Bleeding

I had two mild strokes last July and one TIA in December. I am on plavix and Lipitor. I m type 2 diabetic, 63 years old and obese. I just had a toasted sandwich at 4:45pm (a little over an hour ago). There was no discomfort, but coughed up blood a few minutes ago. Looked in the mirror and must have scrapped the forward part of my tongue on the toast. It is not bleeding fast, but continues a slow bleed. What can one do to stop a mild tongue bleed?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to Health Care Magic Team.

Understanding your concern about oral health.

As per your query you have past medical history of stroke and diabetes, Scrapping of tongue is probably because of tongue bite. It could be possible you take sandwich when it was extremely hot and it caused scrapping as you have increased probability of bleeding even from minor injury because of preexisting condition of diabetes.

I would suggest you to rinse it properly first with antibacterial mouth wash or small pinch of salt in water rinse as both have antibacterial properties. Now wash your hands properly and apply pressure with ice cubes for 5-10 mins on and off. Keep drinking cold water. Avoid spicy and extreme hot food. You can take honey 2-3 times a day it will fasten healing. Ointments such as Anbesol can be applied as it will anesthetize tongue temporarily. Milk of magnesia can be applied on tongue using cotton swab, it will give soothing effect.

Your symptoms will subside in 3-4 days. If it keeps on persisting more than a week then visit physician nearby you.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
