Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I ve considerably gained weight over last year. My height is 5 10 and weight is 105 Kg. I do regular excercise and strictly follow dieting schedule. Although weight gain has stopped but it is not declining. What should I do. My Physician has advised me for Bariatric surgery. My Metabolism is distrubed and I m taking madicines for hypothyroidism. (125 mg/day).
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns. Your BMI is 33.2 kg/m2 . Bariatric surgery can be considered for patients with severe obesity (BMI 40 kg/m2) or those with moderate obesity (BMI 35 kg/m2) associated with a serious medical condition. Check your thyroid status again, particularly TSH and get the dosage adjusted by your doctor. Levothyroxine requirement is usually 1.6 mcg/kg body weight (typically 100–150 mcg). If your TSH is in the lower half of the reference range,it indicates thyroid status under control. In such case the anti-obesity drugs which can be tried under doctor's advice for patients with a BMI >30 kg/m2 or a BMI >27 kg/m2 are:
Orlistat (Xenical)- a synthetic hydrogenated derivative of a naturally occurring lipase inhibitor, lipostatin, Taken at a therapeutic dose of 120 mg tid, orlistat blocks the digestion and absorption of about 30% of dietary fat.
Sibutramine- anorexiant (with no addictive potential) provided you are not having any cardiovascular disease.
