my mother had a breast cancer and we treated it by chemotherapy ,, in the last month or so she was coughing a lot ,,we made chest xray and we discovered that the has mild Pleural Effusionin the right lung the scan shows the right side like half of it filled with water? how is this mild? why this effusion came back she was absolutely fine? and what can we do to heal this? i read that we can use a tube but this can cause an infection or we can do chemotherapy again!! what s your recommendation please! i m lost
Thanks for your question on HCM. Pleural effusion in breast malignancy patient can be due to the following causes. 1. Malignant pleural effusion. Spread of tumour cells in pleura and cause effusion. 2. Infective etiology as chemotherapy decreases immunity and makes patient more susceptible to the infections. 3. Hypoproteinemia and anaemia (possibility of these is less in your case) So we have to rule out these causes. And for this we need pleural fluid. So diagnostic pleural fluid aspiration is needed. Get done following test of fluid 1. Pleural fluid Routine and microscopy 2. Pleural fluid cytology 3. Pleural fluid culture and sensitivity. So consult pulmonologist and discuss these things.
