I am a 62 yr old female that recently I have a very hard time to fall asleep. I have been taking gravols but they are not helping. Every night I go to bed around midnight because I am not tired and usually see 3:oo am every night. Any advise? I retired 2 years ago and slept much better when I was working. I do not miss work.

Hello Madam,
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

As age passes sleep duration generally decreased. Sleep is required to give rest and re-energize the body and mind. When we work either physically or mentlay we get tired. To remove that tiredness as well as to work again on next day we need sleep.
As you are retired, your work is decreed. So you do not feel tiredness and consequently your, sleep requirement is reduced.

You can do following things.
Start exercises like walk or slow run. At least 45 minutes exercise per day.
Try to find some work which you can do, not for monetary purpose but to make you active.
Solve puzzles or play with small children.
Do not use your bad for any other activity except sleep.
Take a shower before going to bad.
A warm cup of milk before 15 minutes going to bad will help you a lot.
Do not sleep in daytime.
Do not watch exciting or horror tv shows before sleep.

After doing regular above measures if you still not get enough sleep, go to doctor. you can be helped with zolpidem, clonazepam or lorazepam for sleep. You can take it without any significant side effects.

Hope I have answered your query
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki
