Suggest Remedy For Reaction To Potassium Infusion

yesterday patient was issued potassium fusions through I V reactions bad a lot of pain and burning iv had be slowed to lowest drip and mixed 50 50 with saline -today patient is to take 2 x 20 meg potassium tablet - question once pill is taken what cn be done if reactions start

Hello,

the reactions you mentioned had to do with intravenous administration of potassium and are not expected with oral administration of the drug. Potassium is a well known irritant of the veins particularly when administered rapidly and in higher than usual concentrations.
Oral potassium sometimes sometimes causes diarrhea or loose stools.
For the vein irritation you can use a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug unless contraindicated for medical reasons. If the irritation is minimal, just wait and it will go away very soon.
