Suggest Remedy For Prolonged Infection Post Surgical Extraction Of Wisdom Tooth

Hi. Had a wisdom tooth surgically extracted on May 26th. Took 7 days of amoxicillin, 500 mg, 3 times per day. Developed infection in left jaw and Tmj area. Been on clindamycin, 300 mg, four times per day, for ten days now, and while I have noticed improvement, I still have infection and drainage through the incision site into my mouth. Still have pressure in the ear drum tmj area and am starting to feel sinus pressure on left side of face again. I am also feeling tightness in the back of my neck. My clindamycin runs out tomorrow and I am worried that this infection is becoming resistant to treatment. What should I go on to kill this infection?

Hi Dear,
Welcome to HCM.
Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . Well this a case of severe infection . It seems to me that it is not only a dental infection but something more complicated as it is spreading in facial spaces and causing space infection. It has already spread to surrounding area . Sometimes residual infection left after exaction which gradually increase with time .

I would suggest you to immediately consult oral surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may take X-ray or CT scan of whole face to rule out condition like cellulitis .

Doctor may give intravenous antibiotics , give incision and drain the pus or give incision and place the tubes for drainage along with stronger antibiotics.

Till then take proper rest and continue your remaining antibiotics .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,

Dr. Harry Maheshwari
