General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome.

Diagnosing/finding the cause for the stiffness would be the primary approach. Assuming by his physically fit nature, his could have been a sports injury and so it could be possible that he has pulled a ligament or muscle requiring rest, ice pack, and pain management.

But I would recommend a doctors visit if his pain has not subsided or at the least started reducing in 24-72 hours.

Best wishes.
