Suggest Remedy For Neck Pain And Bad Headaches

I was blacked out drunk at a bar about a week ago and slipped on the stairs and hit the back of my head and neck on one of the steps really hard. I gave myself whiplash and totally blacked out. An EMT checked my eyes twice and said I didn t have a concussion. What worries me is that since I was so drunk I don t really know how hard I actually hit the stairs with my head and neck. But both of my friends said I took a hard fall and bascially knocked myself out. I ve went to the doctor and she said that if Im not throwing up, I should be o.k. and gave me something to help with the pain. But Im still having really bad neck pain and the back of my head feels like it is bruised and really bad headaches. Is this normal for it to hurt this bad a week later. I also have been constantly icing it every night before I go to bed.

Hello,

You are experiencing bad neck pain and pain at the back of your head. Your head feels like it is bruised and you also have bad headaches after a fall. You are suggested to get clinically examined by a GP or in the ER, get X-ray, CT/MRI of the brain done to detect any interna injury, internal bleeding, other pathology that is causing you symptoms of headache.

Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. For neck pain you can take acetaminophen or Combiflam, one stat after food for relieve. Muscle relaxants may help. You can also apply pain relieving sprays and get a gentle massage done with pain relieving ointments. Warm compress may be helpful.

Get connected to a Physical therapist, do exercises to strengthen your muscles, improve posture and restore normal movement. Doing exercises under a Physical therapist will help to restore range of motion in your neck and get you back to your normal activities. Stay away from addictions, alcohol, smoking, drugs, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
