Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Remedy For Macular Degeneration In An Elderly Person
I am 84 years of age. I have age related macular degeneration for about 5 years. I am taking spill that supposedly helps my condition. Also I am getting a monthly injection in 1 eye of avistion. I read & seen videos of a cure called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. I contacted the University of Kentucky where the research was being done. This drug has been used for over 20 years in the treatment of h. i. v. However I was told that they needed more research before they could try it on me. At my age, my question is, are we afraid it will kill me?
Hello I have gone through your question and understand your concern. Unfortunately the research carried out in the University of Kentucky was done on healthy mice and mice lack macula. Therefore the possibility of using the treatment on human population is only after proven benefit in clinical trials. Medicine is prescribed only after calculating risk benefit; the drugs used in treatment of HIV have serious side effects like rash, dizziness, insomnia, HIV itself, fatigue, mental disturbances, anemia. But the benefit is a cure from HIV where as in age related macular degeneration the risk ratio or side effects of medication is more when compared to the effects of disease itself. My suggestion is to add vitamin B complex and antioxidant supplement to your daily routine along with discussing with your treating ophthalmologist about other possible approaches like laser. Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
