Hi - I ve had chronic sinusitis all of my life. It appears to have gotten significantly worse in the last 2 years. Last year, I was sick for most of October-March, and this year has been similarly bad. As a result, I ve been on a series of antibiotics. This December (e.g. just 2 months ago), things took a turn for the worse. I developed a form of parosmia or cacosmia. Everything seems to smell worse. Particularly foul: coffee, onions, wine, smoke, and citrus/acidic liquids, which smell like vinegar and dog feces. As a result, it is difficult to eat, drink, and function normally. I ve gotten CT scans (November 2014 sinus scan showed inflammation and tissue thickening) and brain MRI scans (January 2015 scan showed no problems). None of these tests has provided any answers. In terms of possible triggers: 1. In December, an immunologist prescribed a NasaTouch Powered Atomizer/nebulizer with various medications, including Mupirocin (treats bacterial infections), Tobramycin (treats bacterial infections) and Betamethasone (corticosteroid). I used these from December 10-24, and then stopped after seeing no improvement. I started noticing smell distortions shortly thereafter. 2. I swam in a lake in November, as part of a triathlon. 3. I was particularly sick from October-November with a bout of sinusitis and possible related illnesses. Other possibly related factors: 1. I have low immunoglobulin levels (IgG in the low 500s), and am starting gammaglobulin therapy to raise them. 2. I have elevated mercury levels. 3. I eat very healthfully - mostly fruits and vegetables - and compete in triathlons, occasionally winning my age group. All doctors I ve seen find it perplexing that someone who appears to be as healthy as I am is getting sick as often as I am! Can you please help me get my normal sense of smell and taste back?
