Hi there. I m a sheetmetal worker. I got punctured with a sharp cutoff of galvanized metal roughly an inch above the wrist and off centre about an inch. Didn t bleed much, but there a bit of bruising and quite sore...should I be worried? Worries enough to get it looked at by a doctor? Thanks in advanced. Tyler
Hello, Thank you for writing to us at healthcareMagic
The injury itself is not much of a worry and you may just an OTC topical antibacterial ointment e.g 2% mupirocin ointment, twice daily, for 5 days, till the wound heals. Bruising is self resolving and requires no particular intervention. However, since this was possibly a contaminated wound, therefore, I would suggest a Tetnus shot, if you haven't had one in the preceding 6 months. The shot is basically to prevent from a potentially life threatening complication of tetnus. Tetnus can happen from relatively trivial injuries, specially puncture injuries with sharps like contaminated nails etc which introduces the bacteria deep into the wound.
