Suggest Remedy For Cough With Stuffiness

Have a bad cough and stuffiness, slight fever, cough so hard that instance sharp pain at the top, sides and back of my head. It took hours for it easy off. It reaaly scared me, I could not go back to sleep due to the pain and coughing. I am a 54 female and so afraid that it will happen again tonight. what could be the problem and should I go to the ER if it happens again?

Should it recur and the symptoms severe enough or associated with breathing difficulties, please seek medical consultation. However, my thinking is that this happened once but would probably not happen again and in no way represents a disease or disease process.
