Suggest Remedy For Accidental Usage Of Cold Sore Drops Instead Of Eye Drops

My dad accidently took cold sore drops instead of eye drops. He has been rubbing his eyes all day complaining about a bug flying into them and my mom gave him the wrong bottle. The cold sore medicine is Releev and one of its main ingredients is benzalkonium chloride. We ve been reading up on it and most eye drops have concentration ranges between .004% and .01%. Releev has around .13%. He has only rinsed his eye out for 2 minutes and went to bed. We would just like to know if we need to take him to the hospital/emergency care.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The topical use of Releev drops is generally safe and mostly without any known side effect. Therefore, in my opinion, you are not required to take any extra measure apart from flushing the eye with water, you have already done. At the maximum, you may rinse the eye more with water, if irritation still persists.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
