Suggest Remedies For Tightness In The Throat Causing Choking Upon Food Intake

When my husband eats, he often starts choking because food gets caught in his throats. He has had two, operations in the past to loosen rings or bands in his throat. The operations helped for awhile but the choking has returned. How many times can he get the rings loosened without seriously affecting his health? Are there any alternatives to the operations?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Most probably it is due to acid reflux or GERD.

We have to rule out other causes like lump or mass in the throat and abnormalities of food pipe.

As first-line management, you can take antacids like omeprazole or pantoprazole.

If symptoms persist better to consult a gastroenterologist and plan for an endoscopy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
