Suggest Remedies For Persistent Pain In The Knee Due To Arthritis

Hi, I have been experiencing a lot of knee pain in the front and back of knee, since hurricane Mathew. I do have athoritis in my knee as well as a pea size cyst on top. My knee hurts more as the evening approaches. I do walk on concrete floor 10 hours a day at work. My knee gets to hurting so bad I can t bare weight, bend, or walk without tearing up. I recently went to the doctor about it but the doctor cut me off immediately and said I have another form of athoritis and gave me steroids (which did not help) the pain often ends up traveling further down my calf. I did break my knee when I was 1 and 2 years old. I have also pulled the tendon a couple of times. Please help. I can t take it anymore. Any advice or anything will help.

Hi,

The knee pain can be due to bony involvement- weak bones, infection, degenerated bones/ inflammations bursae or ligaments around joint/ torn ligaments in joint /reduced fluid in the joint / simple calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Whatever the cause your knee is not able to bear your weight making it a point of concern. The pain radiating down is due to pressed nerve (which supplies the calf) by joint.

In such condition, you need assessment of the joint condition by investigation like MRI. This will reveal the cause and facilitate specific management (which could be NSAID drugs, calcium, vitamin D and glucosamine supplements / physiotherapy/ surgery). In acute pain you should give rest to the joint.

Use hot or cold pack/ take pain medicine like Ibuprofen over the counter till you can get appointment of an orthopedic knee specialist. Reducing weight by diet control and yoga exercises/ walking when possible would facilitate the relief.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
