Suggest Remedies For Persistent Dry Cough

I have a persistent dry cough for the last 2 months. I had/have no cold or flu or lung problems. I have never had any allergies. I don't work with chemicals or solvents that might cause a cough. I am an elementary school counselor at the same school for the last 10 years. I approximately 20 lbs over weight. I move a lot at my job. I try to exercise on my treadmill but I haven't walked much the last 4 months. My heart doesn't race nor it is irregular. I have no shortness of breath.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms could be due to viral or allergic bronchitis, acid reflux/GERD. If it is not associated with fever, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest congestion then nothing to worry and take following advises for next 7-10 days.

- Take Cough syrup containing guaifenesin and dextromethorphan: 10 ml three times a day
- Tablet pantoprazole before meal
- Tablet cetrizine at bedtime
- Drink plenty of lukewarm water
- Steam inhalation 3-4 times a day
- Strepsil throat lozenges (neem and honey flavor):take every 3 hourly
- Avoid cold beverages, exposure to pollutants, active and passive smoking, excessive oily/fatty food

If the cough persists despite using the above medication then further workup would be required by consulting the pulmonologist.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
