General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and thank you for your question.
The first thing to do is start a prenatal vitamin containing folate. You should stay on this even if you are not pregnant if you are having unprotected sex. Next make sure that you did a pregnancy test at an optimal time, that is one week after a missed period or 3 weeks after sex. It also needs to be in a first morning urine. Then see an obstetrician or a midwife for more formal testing and prenatal care if you are pregnant. A midwife can guide you if you want to do a home birth.
