Suggest Medication For High BP With Least Side Effect

I am 69. male. healthy. 5ft. 10 73kgs. Since about 7 years ago, i start having some high blood pressure. Ranging from 130/80 before medication and 110/75 after one dose of 1.5 tablets per day once in the morning (can not take twice a day, blood pressure drops rapidly and can not function in daily activitiesof either micardis or telmisartan HCT 80mg. Since about 3 years ago, I slowly have leg cramps during sleep and eventually turned to day time leg/arm muscle pain and recently, the pain gets so severe, i sometimes feel my lower legs are blowing up or some things are pumped inside and not returning up . There is no visual change of legs except the pain suddenly attacks and disables me in doing anything (leg/lower leg-muscles). I was taking one 500mg calcium daily before now just changed to two tablets a day and seems the above condition improves a little (not much). I had complained many times to several of the local physicians about my leg pain issue and I was told is ok . I am beginning to believe this might be related to the Telmisartan or Micardis I am taking now. I have regular complete body check up every 6 months and everything are perfect including urine tests. I tried several other medications for high blood pressure stage 1 and all have obvious side effects. My questions is: 1)Judging from above, would you think this is blood pressure pill related or some other possibilities? ( I went through a number of specialists and everything checked out fine so to speak) 2)Is there a high blood pressure pill that has the absolute least side effect? 3)Would you think I just take a water pill without the Micardis to eliminate the possible cause of pain? Thanks Peter K

Hi,

In my opinion, your symptoms may be due to use of hydrochlorthiazide. Hydrochlorthiazide may cause increased uric acid and / or decreased potassium levels in blood and also disturbance in lipid levels. Due to all chemical changes, cramps, easy fatigue-ability and sexual weakness are common side effects. Hence, I think that you should discontinue HCT and add some other group like beta blocker or ace inhibitor under guidance of your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
